The President of the Republic Mr Demetris Christofias condemned with abhorrence the incidents against Turkish Cypriots that took place last Saturday.

In statements to the press, after the memorial service of Archbishop Makarios III in St John’s Cathedral, and invited to comment on the incidents against Turkish Cypriots last Saturday along with the problems that the two communities face due to extremist elements, President Christofias said:

“this is a long-standing problem and when we talk  about 1957, 1958, 1963, 1967 and 1974 and about chauvinist and nationalist circles from both communities and do not want to condemn these actions, it is as if we are cultivating division instead of the reunification of our country”. “I condemn with abhorrence the actions of masked men against our Turkish Cypriot compatriots. Just as EOKA B' always the extreme right elements, in the name of cleansing our country, serve only the Turkish propaganda and help it immensely.  Consequently, even if it is only for this reason, these actions should be condemned, but there is a sincere effort to reunite our country and these actions are totally hostile to this effort,” the President of the Republic noted.
