There is an investigation underway regarding the issue of a Cypriot flagged ship that has docked at Limassol port, and an inspection is in progress, the President of the Republic Mr Demetris Christofias stated on Friday.  In statements to the press on the sidelines of his visit to the Indian High Commission, where he signed the book of condolences for the death of the former  President of India R. Venkataraman, President Christofias asked on the issue of the ship said: “we are acting responsibly;

I cannot make comments now that in the process may create more trouble, because it is a problem for us that we are obliged to accept a  ship under the Cypriot flag that is carrying whatever it is carrying, which  is contrary or in conflict with resolutions of the United Nations. We are making an investigation to ascertain what it is carrying and it is for this reason that I said that we need to handle this issue very responsibly and with a lot of seriousness, without making a lot of fuss in the press.Asked whether the government knows that what the ship is carrying is against the UN Security Council’s provisions or whether there is an accusation about this President Christofias said: “we are making an investigation, as I said, with a lot of seriousness. These issues will be determined and we will give our position.” Moreover, the Minister of Foreign Affairs Mr Markos Kyprianou, in a statement on the issue said that the “Cyprus Government will handle the issue in a responsible manner, taking into consideration all the parameters”.
