Προσεγγίζοντας το διεθνές αεροδρόμιο Νιαγάρα στο Buffalo άρχισε, λίγο μετά τις 10 το βράδυ τοπική ώρα, τη διαδικασία καθόδου κι ενώ στην περιοχή έπνεαν ισχυροί άνεμοι κι επικρατούσε ομίχλη και αραιή χιονόπτωση. H επικοινωνία, μέχρι την στιγμή που διεκόπη ξαφνικά, με τον τον πύργο ελέγχου λίγο πριν την πρόσκρουση ήταν κανονική, χωρίς να αναφερθεί κάποιο πρόβλημα. Κατά την προσγείωση το αεροσκάφος χάθηκε από τα ραντάρ, για να συντριβεί από άγνωστη μέχρι στιγμής αιτία πάνω σε σπίτι πυκνοκατοικημένης συνοικίας.
