Republican Sen. John McCain took a dig at President Donald Trump, telling The Guardian that American leadership was stronger under former Democratic President Barack Obama.

McCain’s comments came after a Guardian reporter asked the senator what message the president had conveyed to the U.K. after he criticized London Mayor Sadiq Khan via Twitter last weekend about his response to the terror attacks in London.

“What do you think the message is? The message is that America doesn’t want to lead,” McCain said, while adding of the rest of the world: “They are not sure of American leadership, whether it be in Siberia or whether it be in Antarctica.”

The reporter then asked McCain if America’s standing on the global stage was better under Obama.

“As far as American leadership is concerned, yes,” McCain responded.

Khan had this to say about the attack’s aftermath in a BBC interview: “Londoners will see an increased police presence [Sunday] and over the course of the next few days. No reason to be alarmed.”

Trump responded to Khan’s words in tweets sent out Sunday and Monday. Trump’s critics said he took Khan’s words out of context, but the president stood by his tweets.
