The Ecumenical Patriarchate published the text of Tomos on autocephaly of Orthodox Church of Ukraine on January 14. The document is available in English, Greek and Ukrainian languages as the website of the patriarchate reported.
“…we recognize and declare this Autocephalous Church, established within the boundaries of the sovereign territory of Ukraine by means of this signed Patriarchal and Synodal Tomos, as our spiritual daughter, and recommend that all Orthodox Churches throughout the world acknowledge and commemorate it by the name “Most Holy Church of Ukraine” with its see in the historic city of Kyiv, without being henceforth entitled to establish bishops or found extraterritorial altars in regions,” the document says.
According to the text of Tomos, the Autocephalous Church of Ukraine “knows as its head the most holy Apostolic and Patriarchal Ecumenical Throne, just as the rest of the Patriarchs and Primates also do.”
On October 11, the Synodus lifted the anathema from Filaret, head of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of Kyivan Patriarchate, and Makariy, Primate of Ukrainian Autocephalous Orthodox Church. Filaret stated that the United Jubilee Bishops’ Council would take place soon to create a unified Ukrainian local church.
The ceremony of signing of the Tomos took place on January 5, 2019 in Istanbul. On January 6, 2019, Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew handed the Tomos on autocephaly and bishops’ crosier to Head of Ukrainian Autocephalous Orthodox ChurchEpiphaniy. The same day, Tomos landed in Kyiv.
On January 10, Tomos on autocephaly for the Ukrainian Autocephalous Orthodox Church which was earlier signed by the Synod in Istanbul, has returned to Ukraine.
