Nicosia is hot under the collar over Turkish Cypriot leader Dervis Eroglu’s settler comments, as UN chief Ban Ki-moon has given a cool reception to his proposal of a peace summit.
Informed sources said Eroglu suggested at his meeting with Ban in New York on Monday that the secretary general call a tripartite meeting with President Anastasiades so as to clarify “where the Cyprus issue was heading”.
Ban is reluctant to become personally involved in the Cyprus issue at this stage, feeling that a meeting with the two leaders could hamper prospects of his stepping in at the appropriate time.
Eroglu is insisting on setting a time plan, with a referendum to be held even before the end of 2014.
His public statements, particularly his comments that all Turkish settlers would remain after a settlement, were condemned by the government and political parties.
