Ten summary conclusions…

1. The official verdicts against Revolutionary Organization 17 November, including for the 2000 murder of British brigadier Stephen Saunders, have only a tenuous connection to the true actions of the members convicted. Several key members were never caught.

2. The work of Scotland Yard and the FBI and CIA was marginal to the defeat of 17N, despite the medals everyone received. The breakthrough was accidental; prior U.S. and Greek theories, even the rare correct ones, hindered the breakthrough as much as they helped it.

3. 17N’s financial notebooks show a semi-professional organization with monthly salaries to four/five members and holiday bonuses and medical benefits to the others. Bank robberies were their exclusive source of financial support.

4. There is no evidence of outside support or manipulation for 17N. ELA’s short-lived cooperation with Carlos the Jackal’s organization played only a small role in its development.

5. 17N’s primary audience of potential revolutionaries was limited, and bitter competition with other far-leftists, particularly ELA, was a key motivation for 17N activities.

6. 17N members used several other organization names for special purposes, including Christos Kasimis Revolutionary Team as its mouthpiece for denouncing its hated rival ELA, and Popular Uprising for its hitherto unreported bombings in Thessaloniki.

7. A secret service informant named Danos Krystallis got close to Christos Tsoutsouvis and then to 17N in 1985. Rather than help the authorities make arrests, he instead used his access to all sides to generate enormous confusion, playing competing bureaucracies off against each other for his profit and amusement.

8. Anna of Riancourt never existed. She was a hoax perpetrated primarily for financial gain.

9. “Terrorist” is an analytically useless label for Greek-style political violence. We should remember that most bomb planters from the anti-dictatorship Greek resistance grew up to be exemplary citizens.

10. Ideology matters. Communists and anarchists competed rather than cooperated. The collapse of communism as a transcendental ideology, and anarchism’s inability to sanctify murder as a tactic, have reduced to a modest, affordable level the risk from Greek domestic political violence.
