The crux of the Middle East turmoil lies in the lack of a new regional order as the old one has collapsed, said Li Shaoxian, director of China-Arab Research Institute at Ningxia University recently.

He made the remarks at the Xinhuanet annual event on major global issues held recently in Beijing.

According to the expert, the changing balance of power between Middle East countries has altered the old regional political landscape.

And the fast growing of different armed groups, extremists and external forces has made it more difficult to establish a new order, Li added.

The expert noted that Iran is now a nearly unstoppable force in the Middle East, but still not powerful enough to maintain the stability in the region.

The Trump administration pursues the “America first ” policy and is reluctant to get too deeply involved in the region while Russia lacks enough power to balance various players, he added.

The transition between political orders inevitability leaves a gap for instability and potential danger and the current situation can hardly be changed according to Li.

As such, huge uncertainty will still remain in 2018, and understanding and reconciliation between all related countries must be reached before real peace can be restored in the Middle East, he believed.

The Xinhuanet annual event is a high-standard platform for vibrant, in-depth discussions among scholars and experts of international relations.
